Shot at Manchester Pride 2019, this series of photographs observes the peculiar early-evening period of the festivities where the party is limbo — some are winding down after the daytime celebrations, while others gear up for a long night of revelry.

I challenged myself to work against my instincts. With the sun disappearing behind the buildings, I decided to use the small pockets of available light to pick out individuals, knocking the rest of the scene into darkness.

To me, this felt more intimate than filling my images with crowds and movement, and I think there’s something intriguing about a collection of images of Pride where the frame is mostly black and subdued.
